Korean Dramas are mostly based on realistic aspects like Love relationships, Political conflicts, corruption or military operations. Not to mention, Many of the series are based on Korean webtoons too. But, They are hardly enjoyable compared to Manhwas.
Realism is rare and such realism is mostly seen Kdramas. Romantic Doctor Teacher kim, Mad Dog, Prison Playbook, Penthouse are one of the best Kdrama which show us the real life truth about love, family and happiness.
These all kdramas have one main reason for their making... The Political Conflict in Korean Peninsula.
The Designated Survivor : 60 Days, is such a political conflict based Korean drama.
If you are Indian, You must have seen the Film 'Nayak' (Protagonist). In the Film, The Protagonist is given the Chair of Chief Minister for one whole day. The Film shows the changes he make and the problems he solve in that whole 24 hrs. After the 24 hrs pass, How the political view of a country changes and how it affects the whole nation. It's a story of A common man changing the a country in one day.
The Designated Survivor is based on similar story line, but Chair is much higher and the time limit too.
The President of South Korea is in deep jeopardy as he is willing to sign a peace treaty with neighboring country of North Korea. President wants his meeting with other countries officials be peaceful as well as get their support in this treaty.
President of Korea wants to acquire full support from USA and hence accepts to import 50000 cars from USA. The Political Pressure from opposition parties is much to control that his own subordinate, Minister of Environment Park Mu-Jin opposed to sign the papers for the treaty. Park Mujin is a scientist and assigned by President himself. Park Mujin is honest with his work and tells about the sideeffects on the environment and future pollution problems if they import the cars.
President gets disappointed since, Mujin refuses to sign the papers.
Despite their friendship and being well to eachother, President suspends Park Mujin as Minister of Environment.
The next day, The Peace treaty between South and North is about to be announced to the whole world. All the Government officials as well as Other country men were present in the Grand Blue House of South Korea.
Park Mujin was with his wife and son to pick up her daughter who was also in Blue house for a school visit.
Suddenly, With Big bang !
The Blue House was in flames... With a blast the Blue house was crumbling and fallen. Park Mujin sees the scene from his car... The Cars get trapped and people stopped to see the breathtaking scene. Mujin jumps over the roads and runs towards the direction of Blue House. He sees the Blue House fallen and Policemen evacuating the citizens and injured. Mujin searches for his daughter, and sees her taken by an ambulance. A group of men come forward and take him away to the basement. He tells his wife to take care of the kids and goes with them.
The Black Suit guys were security officials of Blue House. They took Park Mujin to a secret room.
Since all the government officials, ministers and President have lost their lives in the accident. The only person for the succession of presidency is Park Mujin.
By Article 26, Paragraph 1 of Government Organization Act, In the absence of all the ministers, the last reaming person is entrusted with all the authority and duties of President of Republic of Korea is Park Mujin.
He will be also acting as the Commander-in-Chief for the country by the Declaration of Martial law, since it is similar to time of war. For the next 60 days, Park Mujin will be the Acting President until the next presidential election.
Park Mujin has to accept his role as president and give people hope in this disastrous situation.
Despite how knowledgeable and genius Park Mujin is, He was not a political material. He was never elected by people nor did we has political background. He did know the political knowledge as well as how the system works. But, There is the most important thing missing in him!
The desire for power and authority.
He doesn't want to force or rule over someone. One can say, He doesn't has his own will. Hence, He is deemed incompetent by his own people.
The other political parties prepare to disregard his current situation and try to demoralize him in public. Many take advantage of his kindness and get there merits for next presidential election.
The potential candidates for President try their own way to get their power level up.
In the meantime, The North is making their moves to get into South. The main culprit behind the Blue House attack is suspected to be North Korea. The NIS and other intelligence are trying to find the culprits of the attacks.
An army force is mobilized to take their revenge over their fallen country.
A survivor is found among the fallen victims of Blue House tragedy. A miracle which saved a military officer. This gives the hope of potential survivors in the Blue house.
But, The Survivor is not saved by a miracle but a planned escape.
Park Mujin becomes unable to handle his duties as President as well as his family responsibilities. He even doubts himself and feels unworthy for the central position.
Any normal perosn would be overwhelmed when he is given the most important role for the country.
But, With the little help from his subordinates and secretary, Park Mhnun rises again and takes his own fate into his hands.
Will he be able to carry out his role as President?
Will he survive these 60 days?
Who bombed the Blue House?
Who was behind the attack?
Will Park Mujin become President again?
The story has so many thrilling scenes and suspense. I can't just spoil the climax for you.
There is so much political drama and knowledge explained in this drama. The are scenes which might feel patriotic and betrayal but there is great realism in those scenes. The military operations, the detective skills, as well as political and strategic plannings. The Designated Survivor: 60 days has it all.
With 16 episodes, It's one of the best Korean Dramas to watch. If you are fond of politics, I would definitely recommend to watch this drama. It's really good for one time watch.
