The one who enters these gates and gets to the past are given roles based on their intelligence and strength, by the Shadow world. The Person has no choice but to follow his character.

Desir being a commoner was enrolled into Beta Class, was never trained or educated in the past. So he was never fully able to achieve his heights on his own.
